Friis, from Copenhagen, Denmark, immigrated to the United States, eventually practicing in Eagle River, Wisconsin.  He was hired by a Wisconsin businessman and long-time visitor to Aspen, Tom Cleary, to design his family vacation home in Aspen in 1965.
